Commitment to Cultural Humility
The First Nations Alliance respectfully advises that we are strongly committed to Cultural Humility in being, knowing and doing and we ask that in accessing this website you use the principles of cultural humility as a lens to guide your conscious decision making and practice.
The working definition for Cultural Humility is:
We practice compassionate, self-reflection and self-critique in order to cultivate cultural safety for all. Countering the propensity for the dominant culture to ignore, minimise or dismiss the cultural beliefs and identities of another, (re) traumatising an individual, community or people group.
Instead, culture is valued and affirmed within interpersonal relationships and inclusive service design and delivery. We also are mindful of the need to fix the power imbalances that exist within service systems and decolonise these systems acknowledging they are built by and for dominant culture. We see this as a critical part of supporting the important principles of self-determination in a culturally affirming and respectful ways.
